For those who may be wondering, we didn’t produce a 2007 vintage of Progeny because of severe frosts. We lost 60% of our vintage that year but thankfully the resulting fruit was of such good quality that we were able to maintain production of our D’Orsa (Reserve) and Estate Heathcote Shiraz.

The 2008 year started poorly with no rainfall in spring but thankfully (unlike 2007) no significant frosts. The start of summer was unusually cool with a large rainfall event in each month trhough to February, setting the wines up for a great vintage. We began harvesting in mid March in perfect conditions. However, these conditions changed rapidly and the harvest time which is usually spread over 6 weeks was condensed to 3 weeks with the onset of a relentless heat wave that produced temperatures above 35 degrees every day.

"An outstanding Heathcote Shiraz destined for future international cult status"

James Halliday Rating: 94 out of 100
"… intensely aromatic, juicy raspberry aromas are followed by blackberry, spice, fine and ripe tannins, and sweet oak on the palate…definitely a wine to follow…"

Robert Parker Junior Rating: 91 out of 100
"A dense opaque purple colour is followed by complex aromatics of smoke, blackberries, cassis and subtle wood. Drink this impressive offering from Victoria over the next 10 - 15 years."

Nicks Wine Merchants Rating: 98 out of 100
"The palate is explosive - an essay of liquorice, plum, spice and black pepper overlaid by blood plum…the 2002 Shiraz assures Sanguine Estate's standing as one of Heathcote's great vineyards."

Robert Parker Junior Rating: 92 out of 100
"While there are some notable exceptions (Wild Duck for example), I am generally not as impressed with Shiraz from Heathcote as that from Barossa and McLaren Vale. Sanguine's 2002 Shiraz is another exception."

Ralph Kyte-Powell and Huon Hooke Rating:
4½glasses + 4stars value

" A hot-blooded wine for hot-blooded red lovers. This single-vineyard shiraz is a new kid on the block: we wish every new wine that came along was this good…. ."

James Halliday Rating: 90 out of 100
“Densely coloured; archetypal Heathcote, ultra-rich and plush…”

Max Allen
"One of the most impressive of Heathcote's many new wine labels, Sanguine has only one wine at this stage, but what a wine it is....."

PAST VINTAGE: Sanguine Estate 2003 Heathcote Shiraz
Cellar door sold out

Nicks Wine Merchants Rating: 98 out of 100
"Sanguine Estate continues to produce exceptional full bodied Shiraz from their Heathcote vineyard. The yields are miniscule, which are reflective of the drought conditions that have become a fact of life in the district. As a result, the fruit produced tends to be super concentrated - bordering on being an essence of the Shiraz grape."

Steven Tanzer ( USA) Rating: 91 out of 100
"Full ruby-red. Perfumed aromas of black fruits, pepper, spices and licorice; very syrah. Juicy, spicy and bright, firm and precise but also pliant and generous. Classic black fruit and peppery syrah flavors complicated by candied notes and exotic herbs. Carries its 15% alcohol gracefully. Finishes firm, sweet and long."

James Halliday (Aust) Rating: 91 out of 100
“Fresh, clean blackberry, spice and plum aromas; very ripe, sweet fruit shows its 14.5º alcohol; ripe tannins.”

Huon Hooke (Aust) Rating: 91 out of 100
”Another stunning Heathcote shiraz…”

"The 2004 Sanguine Estate Shiraz is showing more elegance and refinement than previous vintages. Opaque black purple colour with purple crimson hue. Perfumed nose of redcurrant, violets, blackcurrant, blackberry and plum. The palate has good weight, with flavours of plum emerging over freshly crushed blackberries followed by a touch of raspberry and black pepper on the back palate. Soft tannins. Aftertaste of raspberry, plum and blackberry.

This is our seventh vintage of Shiraz and we have followed up with a Top 100 / Blue Gold medal and another 94/100 rating from James Halliday (see below).

Good winter rains followed by better than average spring rains enabled the vines to burst evenly and set a good crop. A warm to hot summer encouraged many vineyards to pick early however a cool March/April meant that we could give our fruit extended hang time for full flavour development resulting in richer more concentrated fruit flavours.

Sanguine Estate ’s 2004 Tempranillo is exclusive to mailing list customers . Tempranillo is the principle red grape of the renowned Rioja region of Spain and due to the regions similarity to Heathcote from a viticultural perspective, Sanguine Estate planted tempranillo in 2002. This is Sanguine Estate’s first vintage of this variety and shows such promise that further plantings are anticipated.

The 2004 Tempranillo displays characters of wild strawberry, cherries and red currants with a hint of liquorice and a herbal character typical of the variety. The palate has wonderful mid palate fruit, well balanced acid and tannin and a spicy herbal finish that lingers. A food friendly wine that will gain additional complexity with bottle age.

James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2009.
“Quite a rich tempranillo, with ample levels of red and dark fruits and a little edge of lifted florals, sweet and succulent, there is a nice twang of acidity on the finish. Screwcap. 14.5% alcohol. Rating 90. To 2012”

Nick Bulleid MW and Peter Bourne, Gourmet Traveller Wine June/July 2008 Issue
“2006 Sanguine Estate (Heathcote, A$29) appealed strongly to me and also to Bourne. “I love this wine!” he said. “It’s deliciously smoky, with dark fruits and chocolate on the nose and intense flavour. I like the balance of freshness with the tannin structure, and it finishes long”. I thought the oak was a little more prominent, but the depth of red berry flavour is excellent. The firm tannins tell me the wine will age well – expected of the best Heathcote reds – and it actually needs a little time to soften.”

Huon Hook, Sydney Morning Herald, Good Loving, September 2 2008
“Top Aussie Red. This Tempranillo fools people into thinking it’s a very good Spanish Rioja. Ripe grapes and sensitive oak treatment have created an appealing red with a lively but elegant flavour. Now to five years. 91/100 Food: Rack of lamb.”

Sanguine Estate ’s 2004 Merlot is exclusive to mailing list customers . Originally planted to be used in a classic Cabernet blend with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot however after many tastings it was concluded that this first vintage of Merlot was too good on its own to blend.

The Merlot displays soft luscious aromas of plum and cherry with hints of musk, violets and the typical leafy character of Merlot. The palate is soft with plum and cherry flavours and savoury finish.

As previously mentioned, the 2006 Vintage was a terrific year for us in terms of quality and we are excited to be releasing our second Shiraz / Viognier blend.  We are expecting this wine to sell out quickly due to the quality and limited amount of stock of this wine.

James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2010
“A very respectable little brother of D’Orsa, with lashings of ripe fruits, the alcohol on the upside, and introducing a touch of confit; however, its generosity cannot be denied. Screwcap. 15.0% alcohol. Rating 90. To 2016”

This wine is Sanguine’s first release of a Shiraz/Viognier blend and we are thrilled with the result. The aim of the blend is to produce a fragrant, spicy and soft style that is more approachable as a young wine.

The Progeny is produced by Tony Hunter’s kids. Tony and his wife Lyn run Sanguine Estate, which is planted on Cambrian earth. The Progeny soil profile differs from Sanguine, with the vines being planted on the leaner buckshot soils that are also found in the Heathcote district.

Totally opaque black purple colour with black purple hue. Aroma of liquorice allsorts, blackberry and spice followed by endnotes of dark chocolate and mint. Generous palate with flavours of plum, prune, stewed fruit and spice. Dry chalky tannins. Moderate length, with plum, stewed fruit aftertaste.

This is our first Reserve wine.  The 2006 vintage was a great year and if show results and reviews are anything to go by, it has been our best year so far.

To pay homage to our Great Great Grandfather, we kept aside some exceptional barrels of Shiraz to produce this Reserve wine.

“Deep crimson-purple; the bouquet promises opulent black fruits with a dash of oak and spice, and so it is, but on a quality level above expectations; incredibly rich and supple, but not jammy; generous oak and ripe tannins finish the taste. James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2009.
